      <image:title>Projects - HOUSE</image:title>
<image:caption>HOUSE is a site-specific installation exhibited at a repurposed mall turned art gallery in Marshall, Texas. The narrow, cavernous space was the inspiration for what developed into two large drawings of the interior of a shotgun house. The concept expressed fitting a structure, namely a dwelling where a family live and gather, within a separate, larger building used for community gatherings. Other components of the exhibition included artwork by local fourth- and fifth-grade students as well as a curated selection of area artists’ depictions of historical houses in Marshall. Displays detailing the process of the large-scale drawings informed viewers about image enlargement for art installations. A companion coloring book featuring visual examples of the town’s abundant architectural heritage was introduced at a reception for the community.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Watercolor</image:title>
<image:caption>As a lifelong artist, I enjoy exploring and working with different art media. However, I find the versatile medium of watercolor provides me with a certain level of confidence and control in expressing many of my conceptual ideas. After using watercolor for several years and taking classes to advance my skill, I’ve developed a style that often leaves me content with and even proud of the work I produce.</image:caption>

Using both prescription and over-the-counter medicines, pills became a medium and were selected for color, shape and texture. Arranging them in a small suitcase, these leftover items become part of a type of canopic jar collection.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Becoming a caregiver is a challenging task. To cope with assisting my elderly in-laws through the aging process, I turned, or returned, to art. The therapeutic qualities of creating and being creative helped me through this time. Art-making also provided the potential to learn more about family through exploration of their belongings collected and kept over a lifetime.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A Time for Watching Birds (Mixed media, 43 x 32 x 4) Regional and migrating birds were observed and photographed then painted using watercolor medium before being assembled inside a custom-fabricated display box. Viewers, upon closer inspection of the work, find each bird is labeled not as a species but with an event occurring during an 18-month period. Events include Covid and a presidential election as well as more personal topics such as the death of family and friends, illness, and reflections on stages of life such as menopause.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A Time for Watching Birds uses the relaxing hobby of birdwatching to visually express emotional reactions stemming from a difficult season in personal and national history. Spanning a period of 18 months, the multi-media work, made to resemble an image collection of regional and migrating birds, pairs each species with an event occurring during this time.</image:caption>

<image:caption>And She Opened Her Mouth… (Collage and assemblage, 17.75 x 18.25 x 13) Magazine clippings of advertising featuring a common female modeling pose were gathered and collaged into a child’s toy wardrobe box made for doll clothing. The poetic lines, “And she opened her mouth, ever so slightly, as if to say something” are suspended within the surrounding visual, inviting viewers to rethink how a sexually suggestive pose intended for selling material products might also be considered the beginning of important and valuable conversation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The large-scale drawing Whalebone Corset began a visual exploration into the historical context of women, how they are viewed within a society and influenced by cultural cues. Future work is planned to continue the journey and articulation of personal emotions surrounding this subject.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Whalebone Corset (Graphite, 59 x 40) This first artwork of feminist exploration was inspired by a vintage photograph of a group of women who appeared to be relaxed and confident with each other while also obviously being controlled by suffocating, late-18th-century clothing such as corsets. Deeper elements include the idea of exploiting the natural world (the whaling industry) to fill the perceived need of fashionable clothing trends.</image:caption>
